4GB slow ram or 2GB faster RAM
#1
Hi, i'm having to 1GB sticks of PC6400 ram and two sticks of PC 5300.
The first ones are able of running up to 400 Mhz the latter are restricted to
333 Mhz.
Do you think it is better i run the rig with four sticks(4GB) which then will be all clocked at 333 Mhz or rather with just the two faster stick having a 2 GB RAM rig.
I run Vista64. I'd be interested in perfomance differences in general as well as what setup would be more effective in running PCSX PG?

CPU: AMD X2 6000+@3150
MEM: CORSAIR 2GB DDR2 PC6400
GFX: PNY GF 9800/GT

Maybe you will gain 1fps more ... lol
Please, change your Athlon X2 first. It is a bad CPU and mainly for PCSX2 !

I understand he has those sticks and wants to figure out which to use.

Considering it's vista64, I'd go for 4GB (Vista is unusable with 1GB, and sucks with 2...). Try and see if you can OC that cpu and ram, and how much.

This. PCSX2 really could care less about RAM speed if you're CPU isn't up to par. And since you're using Vista64, definitely stick with more RAM at 333Mhz then less RAM at 400Mhz. You'll see a significant performance difference.

Do the maths, 333mhz isn't half as much as 400mhz, so it's better to go with the 4GB. (stores more, though it doesn't buffer as fast)

I'm using 4 GB's of the stuff and i'm not having any troubles, however they're right, that processor is a bit weak, i've got a 2.53 dual core, which is where the speed comes from, (mind you, i'm not into the whole high graphical games, give me KH and FFX (and KH2 when it's ready)).

Try running the 4 1GB sticks at 400Mhz. It should work (I've never seen RAM that bad it doesn't even reach 400Mhz).

more is better for ram nowadays, unless there is a huge difference in latency/mhz. doesn't look like a huge difference for you, and yeah vista loves more ram.

Hi, you know of the different ddr2 standards, called

CPU: AMD X2 6000+@3150
MEM: CORSAIR 2GB DDR2 PC6400
GFX: PNY GF 9800/GT

This.

Force the settings through BIOS and pray it works. Worst thing it can do is stop booting, and a quick reset of BIOS settings fixes that.
