If no one has anything to say, they aren't going to reply. Some forums just aren't going to get replies to certain topics... There wasn't any reason to bump this one.

Well, you're asking for something really odd here though.
Who cares about years old dshow codecs (or any codecs at all for that matter Tongue2 )?

Get ffdshow and a nice player (zoomplayer, mpc-hc) + a somewhat modern OS, and you're set.

I care a lot about a lot of things, I watch a lot of videos as well... but this particular subject on codecs doesn't interest me because, as rama says, ffdshow works fine. I don't need to mess with anything else.

well ffdshow is a bloatware encoder/decoder/post-processor & i don't need any encoder/post-processor.
in my opinion, mpc-hc is very basic & superbly buggy.
zoom player, no.

unlike you, i care a lot about quality directshow decoders, splitters, dvd navigators, switchers, color managements wrappers, color correctors & dx audio effects.

i don't install any ds stuff, i just use them as plug-ins, just like emulator plug-ins.

Quality "dvd navigators, switchers, color managements, color corrections"? Uh, yeah Tongue2

As a decoder, ffdshow rocks. It decodes anything you feed it, as long as your cpu is fast enough.
As a post processor, nothing comes close to it's feature richness. (Especially for the audio decoder)
If you want additional features like hardware decoding, you'll have to get the commercial stuff.

But I don't see where Gabest's 6 year old mpeg2 decoder filter fits into this, really.

yes, there are lots of directshow: navigators like powerdvd, windvd. gabest, morgan switchers. add-ons for color profiles: adobergb 1998. bitcontrol color correction, video editing plug-in wrappers for directshow.
there's no deblocking, deinterlacing options in ffdshow for each format.
there are video editing plug-in wrappers for directshow.
i have lots of commercial & free directshow stuff.
almost all mpc-hc directshow filters are modified version of gabest filters.
