Looks like shadows are indeed missing in hardware mode, though it's not always easily noticeable unless you're really looking for it.

When you walk around like normal in hardware mode, you get a 'simplified' shadow under your character's feet instead of the regular shadow. Seems it's being compensated at some parts.
