Big Grandia 3 speed regression in SVN 831
#1
Alright, so, I just got the newest SVN (831) and tried some games out, like Grandia 3 (NTSC), which I know is a very CPU taxing game. And although I admit it never ran a perfect 60fps on my machine, it at least ran 60fps in many places/dungeons in the svns 720 and 791, with 3x Cycle Rate and the three right-hand side speedhacks enabled. BUT, ever since I downloaded SVN 831, there's been a significant drop from 55-60fps to a pathetic 40fps (or even less) in the same dungeon where I know it supposed to run at least 55fps. One way that I speed it up was by turning the in-game camera towards a wall (which usually speeds it up). Does it happen in this SVN? Nope, sure doesn't. It actually gets worse (if you're facing a hallway, it runs a 40fps, but if you turn towards a wall (2.5D angle) it gets worse and drops to 35fps! WTC? Yes, I know the PS2 is an extremely complex system and I know it's very hard to emulate, let along achieve 60fps, but I know for a fact it ran much, much faster in the earlier SVNs. Heck, I even tried deleting the 831 and used the 791 and even deleted the .ini files to start from scratch. But now it seems as though going back to older versions does anything to help the speed know. I know it's a beta version, but this is getting a little too ridiculous. Why is this happening? It makes no sense whatsoever.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
OS: Windows XP SP3 with DirectX 9.0c
RAM: 2048MB DDR2 SDRAM (PC2 6400)
GPU: PNY GeForce 9600GT 512MB GDDR3

PCSX: SVN 831 and 791 (svn build is irrelevant)
GPU: GSdx (6xx and 8xx) 0.1.14 SSSE3
Pixel Shader: 3.0
Internal Resolution: 1440x900 or native, neither impact speed
Speed hacks: Any combination does not positively help speed
Advanced: Same as above, no combinations effect speed
Current in-game speed: 35-40fps almost all the time
Speed it should be at: 55-60fps most of the time (at least the
music should be kept at a normal pace and not laggy)

Speed drops are not considered regressions. If it works faster on another build use that. Our main goal is high compatibility, speed comes second, especially if it is related to speed hacks.

Moved. As bosit said, not a regression.

ok, another game that got that speed slowdown was God Of War NTSC.

Wait, so you reverted to an older version, and the speed was still bad?
You know that this means your whole testing is bogus, do you?

Anyway, I ran this game a bit, and found it seems to be the same speed as ever (very fast).

I will also make this note. I just tried grandia 3, to test what you reported.

Beta 831 is about 5% faster than pcsx2 0.9.6. Tried without any sort of hacks on...

So, it may be a hack problem (in which case we honestly don't care.... hacks are a temporary thing put there, we don't offer support for them...) or it may be something on your end...

If you went back to the old SVN and it's still slow, that means you made a mistake when you reconfigured.

I'm thinking this issue is on my end, but what's causing it to act this way I'll never know. The speed is slower regardless of what speedhacks I use. I know that SVN791 was faster on my end, but again, after having gone from 791 to 831 and then from 831 to 791, the speed is no longer different between the two builds. Yesterday, when using the very same build (791) it was alot faster than it is today. Okay, so, I guess when a new build comes out, you've gotta expect this sort of thing to happen to an extent (since, like you said, speed was #2 priority), but should there be that much of an impact when going back to an earlier version? I can't think of anything that I did to PCSX2's settings or anything on my computer, although there were two blackouts in my neighborhood last night, which turned my computer off twice. Not that I think that's related in any way....but, I've been wrong before. Only if I had money would I get a new CPU. I mean, it could be viruses/spyware slowing things down, but....

SVNs don't change anything about the rest of the emulator itself. I have shortcuts to several SVNs that I can swap between. If you're running 791 and it's slower than normal, you need to check your config. Something was changed or forgotten.

In my case GOW it was slower using SVN 831, using 791 and 0.9.6 runs faster, I'm not using speed hacks.
