[Bug Report] Shining Force EXA (NTSC-U)
#11
(03-22-2015, 08:31 AM)ssakash Wrote: Try using both full/fast boot individually and check whether the issue persists. and also, make sure to try a new memcard.

PCSX2 (1.2.1)
Tried both boot methods on the old memory card and the issue still persists.
The game works however on the new memory card.

Also both logs again from the old memory card.

Seeing as it works on the new one, won't I be able to get the save again from the old one? I was pretty far in the game and it's kinda somewhat depressing to start all over again. xD

you could still try to transfer your old savegame through the bios on your new memcard...
Dunno if it'll solve the problem, but it's worth to give a shot at it

Sorry, but how do I do this?

Also, will my other games' save data be safe on the old one? Now that I need a new memory card to play EXA, I still worry about my progress on the others xD

EDIT:
PCSX2 (1.3.1) Latest svn build
Both boot methods on the old memory card don't work.
The game works on the new memory card.

just boot on the PS2 Bios, then use the memcard manager to transfer your data, just like you would do on your real PS2 (that's a common operation you probably did on your PS2 numerous times...)

can't guarantee.
Better transfer them too

Okay that's weird. I tried opening the old one because that's where my saves are and it doesn't let me open it. Is memory card corrupted? Noooo </3

So at the very least, the error I'm getting is because of a corrupt memory card? Dayum. I can still open my saves from my other games there whenever I try to load them but oh well, was focusing on my save of Shining Force EXA.

Thanks for those who replied, still loving this emulator, got to play a lot of games which I couldn't back then. Hoping this doesn't happen again xD

Yup. I posted a thread in the Bug Squad a few weeks ago about it.

For the people that can't access that section, here's my post for reference:

Region: NTSC-U
Region ID: SLUS 21567
Game CRC: C3F67CAF

_________________________________________

Bugs & Notes:
I have no idea how this keeps happening, but every time it randomly decides to corrupt my entire Memory Card after playing a longish time.
I do have an error in the Emulog when I tried to Save my game. (See Emulog section).

What the game also does is that if you haven't saved in a while, is that it automatically ejects and re-inserts the Memory Card when you approach a Save Statue, and then displays the following message in the log:

Code:
[22:17:03.447] Auto-ejecting memcard [port:0, slot:0]
[22:17:03.997] Re-inserting auto-ejected memcard [port:0, slot:0]

Apparently this has happened to other users as well, and devs were working on it I think, but I'm not sure if they actually fixed it or not.. I saw some kind of 'patched' version posted on the Forums, but some users reported that fix to not be working either.

I think it has to do with that auto ejecting thing that the game seems to be causing. But I can't be too sure. What I do know is that it left a whole bunch of corrupted data files on my Memory Card that I could NOT delete in both myMC nor PS2 Manager. So I have to remake my Memory Card to get it to function properly again.

This is a pretty serious bug if it's happening to more users. Luckily I had a pretty recent backup, but there's plenty of people that don't have a full backup of their Memory Card.

Possible work-around / Temporary fix:
Unknown. I don't know what causes it, nor do I know of any way to avoid it from happening.

Emulog:
Note: I actually had to modify the log of errors and remove MANY lines (it's all the same lines), because it wouldn't let me post due to the post being too large. So I'm only showing the error that popped up. The other 'usual' info that shows in Emulogs can be found in my other topics.

It looks like your errors are different though..

Code:
memcardErase cmd: 00??

memcardErase cmd: 00??

memcardErase cmd: 00??

This game has some serious issues with Saving/Loading the Memory Card. And the fact that it can corrupt the card doesn't make it any better.

I do have to say that after disabling the Auto-Eject Memory Card option in the Memcards menu, the error hasn't occurred YET, and that's after several hours of playing.

When I get some time later I will re-enable it (and make a backup of my card first... >_>) and then I'll see if it happens again. If it does, then we know where to look for a possible fix.

[Edit]
The flickering boxes the OP was having, happened to me at one point, but then about a 100 times faster..
This damaged my entire memory card though, and not just one file. It happened when the game was trying to access the Memory Card to Save my game.

Thanks for the info, Ryudo. I might try what you suggested (disabling the auto-eject option).

Now it's clear to me that this game can risk corrupting memory cards (both new and old), as I'm also getting some kind of warnings / errors in the logs with the [memcard] in the lines. I hope the devs are gonna look at this issue. SFE is such a great game and I want to finish it xD Guess I'll be cautious and do backup save states.

Hope you don't mind me necroing this thread, but I just wanted to report that I'm having the same problem with Shining Force EXA and PCSX2 v.1.4.
