Can you tell why my computer fluctuates in performance?
I've had this laptop for about hmm i'd say half a year now, and it has always been pretty fast at start up and then eventually the speed (offline or online) will drop, stop, or just act in bizaar ways. It can go from blazingly fast, to gruelingly slow, to whatever it feels like doing.

Thing is i dont trust trying to download antivirus software or antimalware ect. because they all do the same thing in the end. Tell me issues it has, asks me to register, then asks the broke pc guy to spare some change. Alot of it. Is there any program that can do it all for free? No strings attatched? I have CCleanr dont know if that helps (i know its not a virus remover) but i have always had my computer mess up my gaming while in the middle of it, more than frustrating.

If this issue can eventually be fixed then i wouldnt have to worry about when the games im playing will stop. Thanks.

Download cpu-z and coretemp and keep an eye on your speed and temp when it slows down, you might be getting throttled

Might just need a simple defrag, or its running out of ram and using the pagefile alot so disable any services/apps you dont need running

you can see the page file usage in the system task manger.

@J-Rpgod

is this your laptops specs??

Processor: Pentium® Dual Core CPU T4400 @ 2.20 GHZ
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel® 45 Express Chipset Family WDDM 1.1
RAM 3.00 GB
64 Bit Windows 7
Inspiron 1545

IF it is then i can tell you this

>you have 3gb of memory in your laptop which is OK

>maybe your processor is also slowing the speed and performence down becoz you have intel pentuim and intel pentuim is a old and slow processor i would recommend Intel i5 or i7 OR at least i3 becoz these are better and faster proccesor so that may make some improvement

>Try using disk degfragmenter on your laptop and use it and defragent the disk it should improve the performence

> the inbuilt graphic card might not be strong enogh to do gaming right so you need to use a better graphics card becoz once i was using my inbuilt graphics card it slowed down my gaming then later i bought ATI 5770 HD and don`t forget to use the latest drivers

Hope it helps you buddy

AVG Free: http://free.avg.com
Avira Free: http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
Comodo: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-secu...curity.php
even if they probably won't reach the security standards of the "big players", it's more than enough for the common user and way better than nothing. those will not force you to pay anything. ads? yes. but limited trial/updates? no. so, don't leave home without it.

and as synce stated the performance fluctuations might be tied to your system being a laptop, they tend to do that, especially when they age, cause the decreased cooling efficiency forces them to underclock their hardware to prevent damages from overheating.

I use Microsoft security essentials for my av since its simple easy and free , also pretty resource friendly.

Um... Don't run more than one antivirus at once, okay? You'll end up with MASSIVE lag on file reads, etc.

Also, when your machine is running slow, press CTRL-ALT-ESC, and check the task manager for processes using a lot of CPU time.

Throttling, background process, virus, many reason. If you absolutely sure it's not your notebook throttling itself, have process explorer or the like active all the time on the tray, as soon as you experience the lag, open it and see which process hog your CPU, most likely it's virus.

RE: Can you tell why my computer fluctuates in performance?
Hi friend!

Let me take this oppuntunity to provide some hints for NB user for more stability.

1)From my experience ,most of delay time is consumed by HDD read/write(cpu will always broost up it's blood pressure as hdd fully engaged).Once of the reason is the cpu is reading/writting the virtual memory for extended ram page access (In fact, windows system will eat more than several giga byte ram for full boot .1-2 giga byte is only norminal boot -[of course there is min requirement below that]).
The rest non-resident memory is store inside virtual memory .The more apps in windows and run simutanously , The more busy as virtual memory. Therefore the slower of overal performance.

To solve this, the best solution is install sufficient ram for operation.Win7 is above 4 Gig ram has already good enough.Switch off virtual memory .
Using Readyboost is another alternative solution to replace virtual memory (microsoft surrenders in win vista and introduce this tech also for the virtual memory slow down reason(one of the reasons))

2) Thermal heating from CPU and hdd will degrade performance:since hdd involved mechanical parts(motor ,magnetic head...).Though their technical spec claimed that they can stand for certain oc temperature for normal operations.Form my experience, the heater the system ,the slower the response.
The system coolling fan inside NB can only support normal or mid-high level usage of CPU ,Graphic and hdd. Most of them can't cool down the system from heating for high demand usage even in air-conditioned room.(That's why we always hear that many nb will shuntdown due to overheat).

Of course ,The best method is keeping the air condition around 25oc.But some time buy a usb fan stand for improving air venturelation is a must( compare to monthly electricty bill ,the price of fan stand is nothing ).
