Cheats STILL not found
#1
Hello, I'm having an awful time trying to get the cheats running in Pcsx2 0.9.8 for Final Fantasy X.

I read several threads and muddled my way through trying several tips to put it in the right folder, convert codes, name it properly, but it still says:
[wx] can't open file 'cheats\a39517ab.pnach' (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

I selected Enable 'Cheats' in the System drop down
and
I made a pnach file titled: A39517AB.pnach
that looks like this:

gametitle=FINAL_FANTASY_X.iso
comment=cheats
//gil

//power spheres
patch=1,EE,0031a3b0,byte,25

patch=1,EE,2031A050,extended,FFFFFFFF

In a thread I read it has to go in the program folder, and not My Documents. Either way, neither contained a cheats folder. I tried creating one and putting it in there as well as the programs folder, but still no. I even tried both versions in the Documents folder for good measure.

I'm stumped.

I'm sure it's something simple or obvious, but I can't figure it out. Any help anyone could give would be very much appreciated.

The System Log looks like this when I open Pcsx2 and boot FFX in fast mode (not sure if the mode matters):

I'm sure most of that is probably unnecessary, but I wouldn't know what so I chose to put it all in. Thanks again.

Ok, I got 1.0.0 running, but it still says none found. It looks different this time though:

Is the pnach the problem, or the location? I put it in the cheats folder in the programs file.

Start with the location, does not matter how many times we hammer on this, people still install games under Program Files on Vista, Seven or win 8. Don't do it, don't do it for PC games also, mainly those using plugins or mods.

It's not PCSX2 failure if the system can't find the file. Is not uncommon Windows is hiding the files real extension and your file could be actually xyz.pnach.txt. Use the Explorer properties, tab "View" to unmark the "Hide extension for known files".

The correct location of the "cheats" directory is under the same directory PCSX2.exe is (not Program Files or whatever arbitrary folder).

The pnach content does not matter to that message, the file itself is not found.

Edit: IMPORTANT. even if that is not the cause for the actual problem is advisable you move the whole PCSX2 folder to somewhere else. You could create it directly at C:\PCSX2 or C:\Emulators and put PCSX2 folder under that Emulators folder or even and preferably on another partition case you have one. right click an empty space on PCSX2 folder and chose New and create an empty .txt file and rename it to "portable.ini" without the quotes. That will grant PCSX2 will use it's own structure folder.

Is advisable to unpack the new PCSX2 version directly there (an empty PCSX2 folder) to avoid possible mixing with the old version. Like it was a clean and complete reinstall. Move only the BIOS, the cheats folder and possibly the memcards to there. May be not meaningful to move the sstate saved on previous versions for they may not work between different PCSX2 versions, still you can try it. Don't move anything else.

Also those codes are wrong, if he wants 99999 gil he shouldn't add that amount as a normal digit, but as a hex address, I could be wrong, but I think that's the case.

Indeed, all codes there except those using "extended" are wrong. Even a packed field is still represented in binary. Hex, octal, packed decimal or whatever base are just a wrap for the binary the machine understand.

Just than correcting the pnach in this case is a long procedure and must be done in the right thread. That one is to get PCSX2 finding his pnach files.

I had already checked that the file was visible in properties and that it was indeed a .pnach not .txt. Also, I completely removed the old version before downloading the new, then I and moved the entire contents of the pcsx2 download into a folder on the desktop and deleted it everywhere else like MyDocuments and Programs. I figured I was confused enough without adding multiple version mix-up to the equation. I reconfigured all settings to find corresponding plugins, bios etc. The program runs fine now, saves and everything, so I set it up properly.

So now the Pcsx2 folder is on the desktop and the program is in that folder. Also in there is the sstates, memcards, bios, etc. as well as the cheats. The .pnach is in the cheats folder. I even made an identical .pnach to put in the Pcsx2 folder to save time in case thats where it wanted to pull from.

The Pcsx2 in there is a shortcut, is that the problem? I've looked for the location of the original program, but I can't seem to find it. Where would it be?

Thank you, StriFe79, I corrected my codes The 'extended' codes I converted myself, but the others were copied and pasted from a site, so I didn't even notice they were invalid.

Standard location of PCSX2 if you don't choose the directory yourself (with the installer) is in Program Files (x86)
