I'm almost 100% sure KH1 has always worked on an 8 directional movement plane despite having analog control.

That would explain things. For some reason I just thought it was impossible that a game with extensive platforming elements, with incredibly time sensitive positioning for dodging in combat, and designed exclusively for a console with dual analog sticks would have, you know, analog control.

Thanks for disabusing me of that notion; I'll try out KH2 instead.
