Keep in mind that the 8600 is still a bad and very low end design. Those other cards shouldn't be mentioned even, they barely support 3d.

Just knowing the difference was good enough. I plan on getting something..... much better.

no, 8400 is the crappy one, 8600GT is fine. most games on the pc ask for 8600GT and higher and a good portion behind that ask for 8800gts recommended, the 8600gt is serving me well at native on pcsx2. and even better on my pc gaming (note that I play PC games at 800x600 usually, supper graphics is not a must for me, only playability and with my processor going higher strains the cpu, but not the gpu)

That's the thing, most people would want to play higher than native resolutions, and you are right PC games ask for 8600gt or better nowadays but that 8600gt is on the low side, it was barely any faster than a 7600gt but it has DX10 which is convenient for GSdx.

somewhat off topic.. but nfs shift (released yesterdy) is asking for a 7800. I'll check the recommended specs later, but this game's literally brand new. of course I have a CPU bottleneck, but on a faster processor I would think that my 8600gt would serve quite well (assuming my next pc doesn't have something higher)
