obvious but sometimes forgotten:
Have you tried closing other stuff, even in background and tray icons?
If yes, tried updateing directx to Mar 2009 version (for Win XP) and your graphic card driver. If it doesnt work, try installing older driver.
Also, try changeing your graphic plug-in settings as well. Most compatible is running in software mode and starts from there
