... I don't. Nor do 40% of our regulars on the forums. But since they're not people you know personally I suppose you don't much care about them.

It's a long and complex explanation that I've made a few times here on the forum on why 64-bit isn't especially advantageous to the emulator -- and I'm not feeling like repeating it here (especially since it's completely off-topic!). A search will turn it up.

A quad isnt useful in 90% of cases, unless you do a lot of video editing and 3d artwork creation, the emulator (and most games) will only take advantage of 2 cores. It will be cheaper and more advantageous for you to get a better dual core for the same price.

I've read somewhere (Tom's Hardware maybe) that you only get an slight overall speed increase from using Quad Core instead of Dual Core.

Also (a bit old, but still useful):

Quad Core is faster when multitasking, however.

Key word there is *slight* and it really is almost unnoticeable. I guess newer apps will start supporting more cores but we are pretty far from that at this time, seeing only professional tools like image/video editing software only support more than 2 cores

There is however the benefit that Windows spreads the processing over all cores unless the application says otherwise.

hmm. what do u suggest i buy? i'm looking in the 120-170ish price range. It seems people here know more than me... not surprisingly.

im thinking about this one:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - 129 cdn (after $10 promo code)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...6819115206
solid choice?

or is the $40 worth:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 - Retail - 189 cdn
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...6819115037

im basicly going for the best "bang to buck" ratio lol

cheers,
Nik

You can easily overclock the E7400 one so it also runs at 3.0 GHz with the stock cooler, so why not buy that one?

Go for the E8400, you wont regret it, not only you can overclock it and get even more speed but, youll get far more benefit in pc games and other PS2 emulated games.

One of the rules when you buy a CPU, get the one you can afford, and if you can afford the E8400, get it.

E7400 is OLD, E8 series is newer with larger cache.
