How much does DX10 help over DX9?
#1
I was thinking to upgrading to Vista anyway, since it seems a lot more stable than it used to be, and DX10 and the future DX11 are not available on XP. I've only tried DBZ Budokai 3, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Persona 3, and I get about 40, 30, and 50-60 FPS respectively. How much further would DX10 improve on that?

My specs

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.16GHz
3.25 Gigs of ram (Max my XP allows, on Vista it'll probably be 4?)
Radeon HD4870 graphics card.

So will be show enough improvement with it (at least 20 FPS higher?)?

Sure it will be enough especially if you overclock your CPU.
About DX10. He will be faster for some games and can be slower.
Just tested: Persona 3 in title menu with DX9 i got 86-89fps, with DX10 47-51 fps.

Mmm, which difference exits between both Directx versions? (I'm considering a change to Vista/Seven might be good for me xD)

I running Persona 3 FES in DX10 ( Windows Vista Ultimate) mode and its slower then in DX9 mode for me.

In Grandia 3 DX 10 also slower on 2-3 fps, in Inuyasha DX 10 doesnt change anything at all.

It's not just about speed.
Directx10 mode offers free near perfect z positioning, so many bugs the dx9 mode has (and that get partially fixed with logarithmic z) are gone Smile

About DX10/Vista:
If you are running AMD OC I would do a double setup. Wink

I am running XP x32 and Vista X64, but the Phenom 9550 is picky there.

On XP it can handle 2.6GHz air cooled (using a non-stock-heat spreader) prime/PCSX2-stable
On Vista the limit is 2.5GHz.
These 100MHz can be a rather big impact. If the CPU limits the game, this can lead to a worse gaming experience than being limited by the graphics. (I know what I am talking about - RadeonHD 3300 - IGP @ 880MHz (700MHz Stock speed))

So my experience was: Game intense graphics do get a boost from DX10 / Vista, CPU intense games work better using XP. (another reason for XP is there that you can use the VM build. On Vista all I can use is the VTLB one, which isn't optimized for speed yet.)

VTLB does not work on Vista/Seven? I didn't know that

In Fate Unlimited Codes I get like 40% more speed (from 50% at DX9).
In TotA I get speedups at places with too much NPCs, but Special Arcane Artes get slow. At DX9 is the opposite, go figure Tongue2.
In Hack//GU Vol1 I didn't notice too much difference.
In FFX-2 I get a BIG speed up, but I like more ZeroGS for FFX-2, removes "patches faces" Tongue2.

@bigfoot29

I can use VM on Vista, just start the emulator when just booted.
