I'm having trouble recording gameplay (both Fraps / dxtory)

I considered using the tilde, but as I often give it hotkey status in the programs I write(thinking that most people don't even know what a tilde is and won't hit it by accident, it's usually assigned to debug) I avoided it because I thought someone else might think the same way. It seems I out thought myself.
