Yeah, the Game thing was nice of them.
That doesn't mean they handled their drm checks "like pro's" though.
Pro's would have bought enough capacity for those 4.3 million users OR they would
have allowed gamers to play without online functionality whenever the drm servers are down.

Just fyi:
Everyone I know plays this game in single player at first, as they all want to experience the story.
That Counter Strike argument was pointless.

Edit:
And please remember that we paid the company! AAA title price, too!

RE: It is May 14th. Tomorrow is May 15th. Hell is coming.
But they DO have enough capacity. The problem is, everybody wants to play it asap causing a server flood (almost DDoS levels), not when they would casually play it. If they got more/better servers, once the initial rush dies down, they will have so much free server room it wouldnt be cost effective anymore, they would have wasted the money buying the extra capacity. Admittedly they are having a few issues (which they seem to have ironed out reasonably this evening) but warcraft is the same, as soon as a new expansion comes out, trying to log in goes to crap, but once it's died down you never have log in issues.

As for the single player online thingy, yeh its a little bit sucky, but the idea was to try and make it easy to play with whomever you wanted, that seemed the appropriate solution that doesnt require you messing with your router. You can play with anybody you like and get help with bits you get stuck on (if it happens).

But seriously, give it a week and it wont be "faulty" as you put it, anymore.

Edit: Oh and gief realid ;p

I complain about the general fact that software you buy these days, software with a good offline part, can refuse to work because of drm.
It would have been possible for Blizzard to implement a way to let people play when Battlenet is down, especially on the eagerly awaited release days.
Yes, I could play again after waiting for 5 hours but that's not what I had in mind when dishing out 60 euros.

I have no idea what a realid is but I'm guessing you want my "gamertag"? (check pm)

Close yeah Tongue

A backup offline would be nice, but they made d3 completely client / server so all attacks and rolls are done serverside Sad

The actual game servers are fine mind, once you're in its great, just the login servers are under too much pressure Tongue

Hopefully they've resolved the big issues now anyways.

And all the pirates? "What error 37?" they muttered, cracking open a fresh packet of potato chips.

Pirates? Is pirating Diablo 3 even possible? ;p

BTW error 37 just means the server is busy and to try again Smile

RE: It is May 14th. Tomorrow is May 15th. Hell is coming.
Yes, Diablo III isn't pirated.

Not will it be for awhile. TO do so, they first have to hack into Blizzards servers, get all the AI, item, enemy information, and much more, then create an emulator.

Much like a MMO. So, think like WOW private servers, you'll need someone to host one of those, a fake Battle.net

Someone will have to foot the bill...then you'll be paying(donating) to keep the server up, when you could have just bought the game and played legit.

Blizzard has made it pointless to pirate. To even play offline, you have to emulate Battle.net

This was also done to stop cheaters; in Diablo 2, enemy AI, items, all that stuff, was kept client-side. Hence, people could dupe, hack, and bot easily.

Blizzard has managed to over-come this by using a MMO like system. It won't stop botting; but it'll cut down on it somewhat, and it'll cut down on 95% of cheaters. Not to mention the threat of having all your Blizzard games banned, NOT just making another account, like Diablo II.

I'm not saying Diablo III is crack-proof or hack-proof.

But it's about 10,000x more secure than Diablo 1 or 2, and it's on the level of a MMO. So you won't be seeing speed hacks, and dupe hacks running rampant.

----------

I swear gamers these days have no patience. I'm 22, but christ, be reasonable here.

The game has issues; more people than a MMORPG logging in.

TOR had server issues and it was a freaking MMORPG! It had less than half the amount of people logging in.

Blizzard can anticipate, but they can't see the future and realize this would be the biggest launch in the history of PC gaming and that everyone would spam log in like a mofo and not act like adults.

It's funny, some people want Blizzard to PAY them, because they took sick days off to play, or skipped work, and are now out a sick day or money. They want Blizzard to compensate them.

I facepalm at this generation. Sit back, do something else.

RE: It is May 14th. Tomorrow is May 15th. Hell is coming.
If you ask me, you SHOULD demand perfect gameplay from day 1. You didn't buy the game with the term of "maybe the first week you won't be able to play because of blahblahbalh" (you shouldn't even care WHY any of that happens, the company you pay should). I am 100% with rama on this one, any kind of downtime is unacceptable for a product you payed for and should be able to play whenever you want (yes even the first minute after release).

All this just shows that consumers like you have somehow reasoned with the fact that hey, it could be down from time to time but it's ok because there are gazillions of people trying to log in and/or because of some other reason. I don't know why you think like that, if there are gazillions of people who want to play and it doesn't work, it's even worse since all those people have payed for a service they are not getting (again, no excuse because it's first or second day of release, they are supposed to have predicted that OR give a viable alternate until the load goes down). If it's the biggest launch ever, it means they got insane amounts of money from all these people who want to play the game, but didn't seem to use it to have sufficient servers to compensate. For a company as large as blizzard let me inform you that there are TONS of ways to 'predict the future' with advanced data mining techniques (which they are already using for marketing). As refraction said, this isn't the first time this happens and
Quote: Blizzard can anticipate, but they can't see the future and realize this would be the biggest launch in the history of PC gaming and that everyone would spam log in like a mofo and not act like adults.

that's the first thing you CAN anticipate, people on the internet acting like 8 year olds.
This isn't your average joe who happened to get more people than he expected and his home PC crashed you know.

My brother has been trying to play 2 days now and never managed, I'd want my money back if I was him. I didn't see anywhere in the box that cost him 60 euro "You might not be able to play for a week or so after launch if too many people want to".

Not totally true. You could run the server on your local machine and set your hosts file to be local. Or set up a machine on the network for the task.

Lol its amazing the nerd rage that goes around if people have to wait 1 more day, its not like the game took 12 years to make or anything, what's 1 day? Tongue

There isnt any difference between buying it preorder and waiting 2 days, than paying the same price and buying it later on when there isnt any problems. The only issue is nerd rage.

If he desperately wants to play it, get him to change to the Asia region, that works for most people if they cant get in. I've played quite a bit on the EU servers so far, they had huge issues yesterday, but they were working on it and they implemented a fix around 9pm last night and it did make a difference (i was trying from 7pm till then to get in without luck).

IF i was paying a monthly sub to play the game, yeh i'd be pissed cos im missing out on time i've paid for, but i havent, i paid a flat one-off fee, so i dont mind waiting a little. Even when wow has major issues and people cant log in, Blizzard are usually pretty good and give you free days to compensate.

As i said earlier, buying more room isnt cost effective as they dont actually need it, it's only due to the extreme amount of nerdgasms going off and the inability to wait that is causing all these issues in the first place.
