Jak X: Combat Racing freezes?
#1
Now, now, I think I know what you're going to tell me. "Just go download the patch". I have downloaded it. And I'm not referring to the black screen after the PlayStation 2 logo. I just randomly get in-game freezes. In about 2 hours-ish, I had 3 freezes (before I decided to just play Jak 3 instead, which, like all other PlayStation 2 games I've tried, runs without freezing).
The first freeze was after the tutorial. When I rebooted, I was sent back to the final part of the tutorial, as if I hadn't beaten it.
The second time... I don't remember.
The third time was in the middle of a race where I was doing sorta okay and such (not great, not bad either), in around the middle of lap 2 or such.

I have never beaten this game before, so it's really like the game is "begging" me to finish it from over on the shelf beside the other games I have. So I'd really like to play and beat this game... but if it keeps freezing averagely every second/third quarter, that's gonna be really tiring.
As such, I would really like if someone knows how to fix these random freezes... or can at least explain why they happen. I don't like when bugs remain both unfixed and unexplained.

I have a 64-bit Windows 10, and I'm playing the PAL version of the game right off the disc using the disc plug-in that uses the CDVD drive or such to play games directly. I have 16 gigabytes of RAM, an Intel Core i5-4690K at 3.5 giga-hertz, and an nVidia GeForce GTX 970. I'm playing in Direct3D 11 mode at 1920x1080 internal resolution. Besides a little lag here and there, it runs very smoothly. If any other info is needed, do ask, and I'll be sure to acquire the info.

We need the full emulog after you observed a freeze.

Do you use savestates or cheats? (Except for the patch)

I'm not quite sure what the "emulog" is. Is it a file saved to my harddrive, or the "console output" screen thing of PCSX2? If it's the "console output", I have not noticed anything weird at all in it after the freezes, but I'll gladly provide it if you want, either way.
No, I've never used savestates. At least not on purpose, and neither accidentally at all in Jak X.
But yes, I use cheats. One cheat. The patch. Beyond that, nope, no cheats. (PCSX2's "console output" also says it only finds one cheat for the game.)

The emulog is the console output as you guessed already. It is mirrored into a file called emulog which is located in the logs folder. This you either find under my documents of in the program.dir of pcsx2. But copy pasting the console output would work as well as long as pcsx2 doesnt crash.

Alright. *Switches Jak 3 and Jak X discs around, connects controller, boots up PCSX2, uses a "full boot", and plays until it freezes* This time it froze right after the second or third cutscene I got to see.

Edit: Also, PCSX2 itself doesn't crash. I copied that from PCSX2's console, and if I reboot the game, I can continue playing without having to relaunch PCSX2 itself. And if it crashes while sounds are playing, non-looping sounds (including background music) will finish playing (but more music won't play afterwards), while looping sounds will just play forever, until I close the game.

Probably relevant, these are the speedhacks I'm using:

EE Cyclerate: 2 (Also freezes at 1)
VU Cycle Stealing: 2 (Also freezes at 0)
Enable INTC Spin Detection: Yes (Haven't tried without it)
Enable Wait Loop Detection: Yes (Haven't tried without it)
Enable Fast CDVD: Yes (Also freezes without it)
mVU Flag Hack: Yes (Haven't tried without it)
Multi-Threaded microVU1: Yes (I have 4 cores. Also freezes without it)

I would try to dump your iso using imgburn and load the iso directly with the inbuilt iso loader. (So not to use the gigaherz plugin)
Reply

But that takes so much time (I think)... And even then, all other games I've played in the same way (using the Gigaherz plug-in) have worked perfectly (except graphical glitches everyone has). But if you really want me to try, I guess I'll do so.

Edit: Downloaded ImgBurn, started turning the disc to an ISO. It's... much faster than I had imagined. I hope it'll do something good for me.

Edit 2: Froze within 5 minutes. The plug-in error here is from when I switched from the Gigaherz plug-in to loading straight from an ISO.

It is highly recommended to use the internal iso loader.

Its actually strange that your fps change all the time. You use a european bios and iso. Normally it should always stay at 50hz. Do you have some 50hz/60hz option in the game? Or some interlaced/progressive switch?

In the end geforce' comment about the questionable validity of this patch can be the actual problem.

The only problem I've noticed while using the Gigaherz plug-in I don't think would happen with an ISO on my hard-drive is occasional lag spikes for a second or two when loading lots of stuff at once, no matter the game, but that's something I can easily deal with. However, those lag spikes don't last forever, and I think the sound stops/repeats during them, too, rather than finish playing current sounds.

And yes, I'm using an European/PAL BIOS and ISO/game disc. There are both "50/60 Hz" and "Progressive Scan" switches in the game's options (as well as mono/stereo/surround sound and 4:3/16:9 aspect), but since it probably takes about 20% more power to emulate 20% more frames, I stick to 50, and I don't mess with neither the in-game option nor PCSX2's turbo function, and I also leave progressive scan off.

But if the issue really just is the patch not being 100% valid, then I guess I'll just play some other game, and hope Jak X will be playable some time in the future.

Edit: But thank you for your effort in trying to help me.
