MASSIVE pcsx2 slowdown after half hour

Processors are suppose to run between 30-60c, because they "can" take more in some cases, it doesnt mean it should. Apart from the fact it can cause crashes and other problems at high temperatures, it will reduce the processors life span much quicker than at lower temperatures. I would suggest as others above to try and improve your processor cooling, make sure the heatsink under the fan is clean, maybe even consider replacing your heatsink if it already is.

Clean heatsink and 70+ degree temperatures = disaster when it DOES get dirty.

Agreed. The thermal limit for a 5600+ is 70c and he's at it already. For people to say it's "fine" running at that temp is just plain wrong.

prithwish : Get some more airflow in your PC, try and bring them temps down, maybe get a decent third party heatsink.

Er... I took a look inside my cabinet and nearly fainted. It was like HELL in there. Lots of dust and oily stuff -_-

Cleaned it out. That helped the temps I think. I'm running 35-45 C at idle now....But still hitting 60-70C with PCSX2.

I think my power supply's inadequate too. For a Athlon 5600+,2GB ram, and hopefully a 9600GT 512 MB next week, I don't think a 400W PSU is enough. Any suggestions?

A good 400 watt's fine.. Hell.. a good 350 watt would be good enough.

For the PSU, it all depends how many AMPS it has available on the 12v rail, this is what powers your cpu/vidcard etc, the more the better. If you're going to get a new one I'd go for at least 550W. No point skimping on the PSU, if you get a good one it will save you having to upgrade it again next time you change parts in your PC. No point going through loads of crap ones that could take your PC with it if and when they snuff it! Just get one good one... Corsair, ThermalTake (ToughPower) & OCZ make some of the best.

BTW, your idle temps look a lot better now but I would still try and bring those load temps down a bit if you can. Smile

Seasonic are brilliant, Tagan are good as well. Seasonic make the corsair units. XFX are entering the PSU market, coolermaster are good, however the extreme editions state the maximum output, not the continuous.

I'd say go for OCZ, stealthXStream or ProXStream, good build quality, good warranty.

still 60-70 under load? hmm are you using the stock heatsink/fan? If you want a cheap (but very effective) cooler, the Arctic Freezer 64 Pro is an awsome bit of kit, cools very well, you cant hear a thing and costs like $20-25

If you can't get any thermal paste, uses tooth paste, but change every few hours.

It's pointless re-seating a heatsink with no TIM.

I really wouldn't recommend this. If he hasn't any thermal paste best leave the heatsink alone until he has. He already has high load temps and toothpaste could make them worse, especially if it's based on baking soda.

Get a tube of Arctic Silver 5/Shin Etsu or something like, they're only a few quid.

Tooth paste's a better TIM than no TIM lol. I prefer Zalman paste myself like, although that's because I find it easier to apply with the brush.

I never said it wasn't.

...unless you have a perfectly lapped heatsink and IHS Tongue2
