Have ya seen my sig?  lol

Yeah, the 2500 and 2500K are identical, other than the unlocked multiplier.  The locked Core i5 and i7 (Sandy Bridge) do have a sort of "limited unlocked" feature when on a performance motherboard (not an H61 or H67), and are able to be OC'd by up to 4 multipliers beyond their respective Turbo.  Have a look at every Core i5 if you'd like. Smile

If you're at all serious about gaming, do not rely on the graphics units integrated on Core i.

BTW - If the folks at your local market said that they no nothing about the "K" processors, they're either lying to you, or completely oblivious to technology.

RE: My (desired) new PC
Thanks for the help Smile. My ignorance makes me feel bad btw.

So does a budget MSI P67A-C43 motherboard pass as a "performance motherboard " ? Apparently it can overclock an i5 2500 to 4.4 ghz...Unsure

As for the shop owner... well when I told him I want an LGA 775 mobo and a LGA 1156 CPU, guess what he did ? HE RECOMMENDED THEM ! If it wasn't for you pcsx2 forum folks, I'd have destroyed some parts in my PC, so I really owe you all guys.Biggrin. Some shop owners are really good, or so I've heard, but they don't have any of the hardware I seek.

yes a P67 mobo is an OC mobo it is nice to buy Smile

and you really don't know what is the meaning of SOCKET it is the platform you should put the CPU to it it wont fit if they are not matched in the first place so you would get robbed if you didn't know that

Laugh LMAO!  I still can't believe how many people get away with calling themselves "professionals".

Stuff has to fit what you put it in, especially on the physical level.  Kind of a general rule of thumb.

4.4Ghz on a "limited unlocked" i5-2500...?
Heh-- Yeah, maybe at the very, very, very peak of possibility.  That's assuming the full 4 bin increase, increasing the BCLK to it's risky maximum of ~200Mhz (again, risky), as well as only processing a single thread (which is sooooo very unlikely, and never going to happen with PCSX2).

So, I guess I should just say no, huh?  I should just tell you the more realistic and sensible clockrates you could run, which will likely be 3.7Ghz after the 4 bin increase.  Turbo Boost would bring you up to 3.8-4.0Ghz.  It will be quite impressive, I assure you.

Great tips guys, Biggrin thanks! These info are so valuable to a newbie like me, and now all I need to know is whether a 550w PSU is enough to overclock this i5 2500

Ah and then there's this little ATI 5670 mystery

(08-11-2011 11:57 AM)synce Wrote:  That card sucks ass. Something like a 6850 should do you good. It's cheap and you'll get 3x res in most games.

I'm not trying to doubt anyone's experience here, really, but between these 3 posts I'm a little bit perplexed... So here's a simple question : Will an ATI Radeon HD 5670 (2GB version) be able to decently play games in a "3X Native" resolution ? If it can only play games in "2X Native" then someone please tell me, and if it can play in more than "X3 Native" (as in Szalooth's case) then someone please tell me. The GPU is the last thing I need to know and then I'll be ordering the new PC

yes most of mid demanding games
i have that GPU ( my budget was a little tight ) and every game i faced i can play with x2 native with speed hacks and tricks
except for Grand Tourismo 3 that game is GPU eater SW mode is faster Laugh

RE: My (desired) new PC
There's a GPU benchmark sticky on this forum, check it out if you want an idea of what to expect. At really high res here are the results

29.82 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 5670 - ilovejedd - GPU-Z

Compared to

64.78 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 5850 - xshadowinxbc

Anything under X850 (for AMD) or X60 (for Nvidia) is budget, ie not great for gaming.

RE: My (desired) new PC
A 550w can definitely suffice. You'll only be drawing up to ~125w after OCing. Just make sure it's not a "cheap-o" 550w. If "80+ Certified" (preferably at least "Bronze"), has a healthy amperage on the 12v rail, is over 500w and preferably from a brand you can trust. If you're still uncertain, just post a link here and we'll take a good look at it for ya. Smile

Try not to let nay-sayers confuse you about an HD 5670. It really will handle things well, especially being the GDDR5 data rate. That "Harsh" benchmark is at 2048x2048; That's like 4x native resolution. Meanwhile, that HD 5670 scored 93fps at 1024x1024 resolution (like 2x native). Also, look at the other cards it benchmarks around:

Quote:33.23 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 4850 (An OC Edition 650/1000, 512MB) - antespo - GPU-Z
32.65 FPS - NVIDIA 9800GT (Stock 600/900, 512 MB) - retsnom - GPU-Z
31.80 FPS - NVIDIA 9600GT (OC 730/1000) - CKL
31.65 FPS - NVIDIA 9600GT - Shadow Lady
31.25 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 4850 (Stock 625/993, 1GB) - iakoboss7 - GPU-Z
29.93 FPS - NVIDIA 9600GT (BFG OC version 675/900) - CKL
29.82 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 5670 - ilovejedd - GPU-Z
24.10 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 3850 (OC 710/909) - Pedrosilvaa

It beat an HD 3850, it's right on the heels of an HD 4850, and is very comparable to the well recommended 9600GT.

Really, it's a pretty good card. Just don't get a variation of the HD 5670 that sacrifices precious data rate in favor of excessive V-RAM.

RE: My (desired) new PC
ATI 5670 is good. Laugh That's good news for me.

As for the PSU, well the 550w PSU the shop owner told me about is too cheap It's 10$ only Excl. So I guess I needn't ask whether it sucks or not, but I'll ask him about its brand anyway, though I'm sure it's a black market production Closedeyes

But how about this budget PSU >> FSP Saga II 500. Is it a good brand ?

One last thing : If I was to overclock my i5 2500 to 3700 Ghz, and then its Turbo Boost might reach 4000 Ghz, then will I need a CPU cooler better than Intel's stock cooler ? I heard that Intel's Turbo Boost actually turns itself off when the CPU reaches certain temps, so...
