RE: NVIDIA .vs. ATI
In regards to Jake's post:

Well, I had ATI cards from about Catalyst 5.8 all the way up until around 8.7. I used three different ATI cards in that time frame: X800 XT, X1600 (for my dad's PC), and an HD 2600 Pro. The X800 started off nice (I put that PC together when X800 was top and Half-Life 2 was due to come out), but it never handled shadows well, and there were all sorts of headaches and problems I had with stability and getting games to run properly. The X1600 was kind of a meh upgrade over a Radeon 9800 pro, and once again there were (and still are) big time headaches with crappy drivers that seemed to only partially support what I needed.

Don't even ASK about my frustrations with the 2600 and accompanying drivers...

So then I move to the 9800 GTX+ and...wow, it was like day and night, to be perfectly honest. Everything just worked, games with shadows actually ran well, and the only driver headache I had was with the Vista deal with "Display driver has stopped responding" which has since largely gone away. Sure, the 9800 was a much more powerful card than the 2600, but the frustration I'd always had with ATI drivers was gone.

So yeah, that's why I've since very much favored nVidia over ATI and hope these latest rumours aren't true.

PS: Gentleman, has the Witcher been patched yet to where it isn't an absolute headache to try to play? I remember when I first tried to play it, it was buggy and choppy as hell.

Have you tried The Witcher Enhaced Edition ?? It's weird, I never had problems with this game using both 7600GS and 9600GT. The only difference, it's kinda obvious, but with 9600GT I was able to play at much higher graphical settings. Wink

Anyway there is a new patch out after the enhaced edition, you can check here:

Not gonna happen, PC gaming will never die, it outlived every console that ever existed and it will outlive ps3 and x360, its just a gigantic myth that PC gaming is dying. We have games that are in development ( exclusives and ports ), most consolegames get ported to PC's, mmorpgs, strategy games, we can emulate almost every older console UP to ps2, we have largest library of games that is bigger than all consoles combined. PC can do everything that consoles can and also it can do everything that consoles cant do. I dont understand how anyone can say that PC gaming is dying. Console compared to PC is a kid's toy.

Check my profile for hardware/software and games i played on PCSX2.

Well the real point was that the driver situation changes. nVidia was once an unstable driver bomb -- only Matrox had a worse reputation. And they achieved a status later that was basically superior to any other manufacturer (with the exception of system stability perhaps).

But technology changes constantly, and if their next wave of cards varies greatly from previous ones in design,, it could be unstable driver hell all over again. Or maybe not. That's just how things go with video card drivers.

I used to be like you, then I opened my eyes and saw the bigger picture.
The PC used to at the forefront of technology, and lead the way in cutting-edge games development. The 90s saw some amazing PC games, then along came 3DFX & changed everything and the 3D accelerated revolution started.
Epic, a company founded and built by PC gamers hasn't done anything since Gears of War 1 on PC, and that was developed on the Xbox 360. GOW2 never made it, and that was mostly due to piracy. GOW3 is almost a certainty, and 360-exclusive, along with Shadow Complex and plenty of dlc.

Microsoft became publisher of Alan Wake and immediately made sure the game was 360-exclusive, and with no future (so far) for the PC, this was to be a game that show-cased the Intel Quad 6600. Microsoft also seem intent on distancing itself from the PC despite the arrival of Win7 and DX11, as most of its income now comes from the OS and the 360, NOT PC gaming, especially after they shut down Ensemble Studios. You would think that if they really cared they would be championing the PC, DX11, and allowing plenty of cross-platform development between the PC and 360.

Crytek have said that Crysis Warhead was their last PC-only developed PC game, and that the Crysis 2 engine is now multi-platform, with consoles more in mind.

PG game devs are looking at their titles coming out quicker on the torrent sites than on legit download sites, and its now considered a success to sell just 500k on PC, if you're lucky, and 3 - 5+ million on consoles as average.

Copy protection is also ruining the PC, screwing-over genuine buyers who now have to go through hoops just to play their legally owned games while the pirates get an easy ride not having to activate their games, have limited installs, and deal with Securom, or the evil Starforce.

The latest ATI 58xx series is £300 for the top card, more than any console, and yet buyers have nothing to play on it except existing DX9/10 titles, and TWO DX9 titles with DX11 paths that aren't even out yet. And with the consoles still on DX9 hardware, the PC will still continue to see DX9 ports with maybe a DX11 patch released if the devs even bother.
Imagine buying a new console only to find out that the only games that are developed for the machine exist only in coupon form, and for now the only games you can play are the ones from your previous console, Laugh

I hate the position the PC is in, but to say its as healthy as its ever been is a tad naive.
