New GPU = performance benefit..?
#1
Hopefully this isn't too stupid a question, I'm shortly about to buy a GTX 680 & was just wondering how much of a performance improvement (or not) this would give me..

Current system is ATI 5870, i7 920 3.8Ghz, 6GB Ram 1920x1200

Thanks.

Probably none, except if you use huge internal resolutions like 4x or 5x

the 5870 has a far slower memory bandwidth to the 680, so you will be able to use high scaling levels in games like Xenosaga 2 without completely saturating the memory during intense fire effects and smoke

Depends on the game, my oc'd 580 gets loaded up to 70% in GT4 at 4x native res, while other games no more than 40% at the same settings

About 220GB's because it's overclocked, but what's your point?

lol, well a stock 580 has about the same bandwidth as a stock 680, which is a lot more than a stock 5870

compared to a 580 a 680 has a slightly lower pixel fill rate and 2.5x the texture fill rate.

I understand that but I was trying to say that replacing 5870 with 680 won't do much if the games he runs on pcsx2 don't load up 5870 near 100%

depends if he uses the 8bit texture shader as well though.

It's always circumstantial.

In any ordinary use,
the better GPU will merely allow higher internal resolutions while maintaining the same speed.
