Nvidia 240 gt with MGS 3
#1
Greetings.

I need to buy a 'temporary' GPU, a GPU that can keep my PC going for the next 6 months or so. So, if possible, I'd appreciate it if someone tells me what is the cheapest GPU that can play Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence decently at 800x600 resolution (no less).

The GPU I have in mind now is Nvidia 240 GT. Does anyone know how it would perform in this game? I saw it in the GPU Benchmarks thread, but I'm not sure whether its scores do apply to MGS3 or not...

My specs are:

intel core i5 2500K [ 3.4 >> 4.4 ghz]
MSI P67A-gd65
4 GB RAM @ 1333 MHZ
Intel Core i5 2500k 3.4 > 4.5 GHz 1.26v Biggrin
Thermaltake SpinQ VT
Nvidia GTX 560 (OC 950/1200), 1GB GDDR5, (MSI N560GTX).
Biostar TP67XE
8 GB Zepplin RAM, @1600. 11-11-11-30 Glare
FSP Saga II 500W
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

AMD is a cheap alternative IMO. See if you can find any decent ATI card in the price range of the GT 240. Personally I don't like old architecture. I'd rather get a budget unit from a new technology.

well, lucky me then! btw the only version available in the market is called "ZOTAC," it's GDDR5 but it only has 512 MB Vram, will this small VRam be a problem for PC games?

it may sound weird, but my PC doesn't accept ATI cards... no matter what I do, ATI cards keep giving me this "display driver stopped working blablabla" error.

i thought you were beyond the VRAM noob Syrian legend Tongue ( VRAM is all what maters !! )
just make sure it doesn't go under 512mb

but check this :

29.82 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 5670 - ilovejedd - GPU-Z
24.10 FPS - ATI Radeon HD 3850 (OC 710/909) - Pedrosilvaa
23.63 FPS - NVIDIA GT 240 - ilovejedd - GPU-Z

if you can get the 5670 for 100$ ( Syria's price ) it will be better ...
it is all up to what's that 240 price Wink

Actually you are pretty screwed. MGS3 has to run in software mode. 640x480 max, and it's just scaled up from there to fill the screen. You could go with it in hardware mode, but you'll have none of the nice bloom effects and in their place you'll have inkblots. You really need to run software for this game. A GPU is useless in software mode, as the CPU does everything, but fortunately your 2500K overclock should be enough to have fullspeed even with software.

As for what GPU to use, I'm not an expert with PCSX2's demands, but it isn't really that GPU intensive; so for games that use hardware mode you should be ok with your 240. But as with everything, more horsepower always means you have more options.

That is a matter of opinion. Just saying. Yes, software mode generally looks best. But realistically, hardware mode is what many people end up using.

For most games, yes it is. I usually run most games in hardware mode, despite missing a few effects here and there. MGS3? It has INKBLOTS wherever bloom would appear. This isn't like just missing out on a few effects, it's a pretty severe problem. It is very obvious and very distracting.

OK, so technically it is still subjective. Some people might prefer inkblots to low resolution. Fair enough. But regardless, there is no ideal solution for this game. It's either HD with missing effects and inkblots, or low resolution. Pick your poison.

Software is not 1080p. The internal resolution cannot change while in software mode. Yeah GSdx HW mode has missing post processing effects in some games like this one but most work fine
