Overclocking and PCSX2
#1
I was on an overclock adventure tonight and decided to check out what effects it has on PCSX2. Keep in mind this was the ragged edge of what my CPU could handle for an OC and I do not run this 24/7.

settings overclocked:
3625Mhz CPU, 250 FSB or 2500Mhz northbridge, HT link set to 8x running @ (stock) 2000Mhz, RAM @ 1333Mhz 8-8-8-22... and a few voltage bumps.

settings stock:
2900Mhz CPU, 200 FSB or 2000Mhz northbridge, HT link set to 10x running @ (stock) 2000Mhz, RAM @ 1333Mhz 7-7-7-20... and all voltages set to AUTO except for a tweek on the RAM.

Screen shots below show good results IMO. I'm surprized too at how stable everything was even though large FFTs in Prime95 test crashed and blue screened!

All PCSX2 settings are default and speed hacks are disabled.

If that was a Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad or Core i7 running at 3.6Ghz, then you would have seen even BIGGER fps gains.

Very true. My E8500 was far superior to this cheap tripple core and seemed to yield even better results when overclocked. 3.8 Ghz was as far as I could go with that set up. I really just wanted to share some results while I had an overclock.Smile

Edit: Holy crap nice overclock Tuanming! 1864Mhz NB!Blink

The bus clock and multipliers are a little different from the iCore onwards Tongue that probably works out to be about 178Mhz BUSCLK (replacement for FSB) with a 21x multiplier

Its 498FSB x4 for NB frequency... Q9300 is 333 x 7.5 for stock 2.5 Ghz. 498 x 7.5 for 3.73 Ghz... I had a Skt775 set up and sold it for $1400 then built this for $550Biggrin

EDIT: Oh oops I mean 9400@ 466Mhz FSBWacko

THe Q9400S (65 watts version) has the multiplier of 8 so I'm running it at 8 x 467 fsb = 3736MHz. But I think I can go much higher to around the 4GHz speed if I had a better motherboard or maybe I'm already reaching the limit of this CPU fsb wall? It's tricky to verify that.... Overall, the Core i series are definitely more efficient than the Core 2. Newer is always better, at least in this industry. Ivy Bridge is said to be 20 -30 percents faster than Sandy Bridge!

why don't you try unlocking the 4th core if you are lucky enough to get a CPU that has a disabled core instead of a broken core. It may be a great risk.

There is actually very little risk to unlocking a core... It's very much "it either works, or it doesn't." If it doesn't, you reset your computer and disable the unlocking feature and everything is back to normal.

Well I gave it a shot and it won't seem to work. Chances are I just don't have the right motherboard. Foxconn Cinema II deluxe is more of an HTPC board and doesn't claim to unlock cores. Also not a great overclocker as you can see.

Some intell chipsets go to 500Mhz FSB this one taps out above 250Mhz some where. I'm just surprized I managed to get 14FPS in SOTC with a 700Mhz OC on just the processor alone.
