I was always under the impression that consoles dont need as much high end technology because they are designed to work more efficient than Pc`s. A console is after all designed to do nothing much more than play games, and all the components work together, unlike Pc`s, which seem more like some Frankenstein monster, the bastard child of many different father company's

The thing is that if the rumored specs are true the PS4 is basically a low-mid range PC, which is no doubt what the 720 will be top. It's all very redundant and I see no reason for EVERY third party game not to be multiplatform next gen. Imagine the sea of Unreal 4 games Rolleyes

the 4k? that's just for beamers and movies and will sure work. maybe they'll try to showcase the new gran turismo on it - but i'm sure it'll look like the version now. highpoly cars but a tad empty on the tracks ambient. but yeah expecting to run 1080p@60 in a fully shader monstered console game it's hard with that hardware. we should get that a tradeoff - the usual 30 fps if so.

IF next gen consoles, the PS4 and X720, can't do 1080p X 60FPS...

I will be incredibly disappointed. It will be so sad. It will be a waste to buy them.

Though, I wonder how good can an x86_64 cpu without OS overhead?

quite good I'd imagine, look at how well the original Xbox fared with the P3 it had in it, not to mention since all the hardware is identical, each game made can be coded to utilize 100% of it's capabilities, with every bit in exactly the right spot while running through the bus and everything. another thing is even if they are using old chip designs, improvements to those designs mean a higher clock rate and more stability. this is just one of those things that we are gonna half to wait and see, maybe our minds will get blown, or with the economy the way it is a cheap alternative platform to play next gen games on+^_^+

I always wanted to compile a 64bit version of DOS Quake to answer that question. I expect the PS4's OS to be as bloated as the PS3's though. It will probably reserve 1 module for the OS and waste RAM on social media widgets and DRM.
I wonder if Sony will allow programming to the metal. They didn't for the PSP and it has payed off with a working emulator on the Vita, and I expect the same thing with next Xbox.

i dont get people about console specs they arent suposed to be top of the line because they dont need it.

look at the ps3, it has crappy specs yet it runs crysis 2 flawlessly and uncharted 3 doesnt look shitty (quite good in fact) but those grapics are impossible on a pc with the same specs..

so if these are the specs of the ps4 that would mean that the ps4 will be 4x stronger then the ps3 thus next gen graphics can be easely achieved.
