You can configure any gamepad with the onepad plugins.

I advice you a XBox 3600 pad, it works well on Ubuntu (tested with Dolphin-emu) and on Windows 7 with PCSX2.

I advise you to upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 (beta for the moment, you can wait april for a more polish release). Then you will able to install directly install pcsx2 without the chroot. You will be able to install any 32 bits library on your system.
