Prince of Persia: Warrior Within help

I just downloaded PoP:WW and found I can't play the game. After watching the intro movie and just about to get to the tutorial/boat fight, the moment the movie ends and the tutorial should begin, the screen stays black, the framerate suddenly cuts in half and the GS stat skyrockets straight to 100%. from there, the framerate just gets slower and slower until the system crashes and needs to close completely. any advice to fix this?
