Ps2 controller problems

I just bought a ps2 adabter to usb so i could use my ps2 controller on my pc, just to play shadows of rome on the emulator. I set up the controls on the default controller pad. But the left analog stick only goes left to right when i use it on shadows of rome. I cannot go north or south at all in the game useing the analog stick.
