Question About Hyperthreading
#11
OFFTOPIC: Your desktop is UGLY.

ONTOPIC: You should turn HT off because you already have a quad core cpu so HT doesn't help with speed that much. Also 1.73 GHZ is kinda weak for pcsx2.

I like it, so that's all that matters to me Tongue2

Anyway, I can't find any way to turn HT off. There's no setting in the BIOS for it, and I can't find any other way to disable it.

disabling htt is not recommended and unrequired; anyone who believes its useless should apply some blunt force trauma to themselves and learn some things about the cpu before saying otherwise, the only setting that can cause pcsx2 performance issues is the turbo mode switching during play.

(03-28-2011, 06:47 AM)Rezard Wrote: Hmm, I'm not sure if PCSX2 would automatically utilize a logical core (thread) rather than a physical. One thing I would say is that Hyperthreading isn't helping you with PCSX2, anyway. You could see if you can disable it in BIOS. It actually could help performance in this case. Smile

On your random crashes, are you using savestates?

Windows 7 uses real cores before ht.

I've seen gaming benchmarks demonstrating that disabling ht does actually add a modest boost to performance because of the reduced overhead, but the difference is only ever about 1% of performance, the biggest benefit to turning it off seems to be a cooler CPU.

Alternately, turning it off will result in a drop in efficiency when coding videos, using 3D applications and other such multithreaded programs ...

Turbo boost is the problem here, the app is juggling the pcsx2 threads causing the core to ramp up and down quickly.

its similar to the issue AMD had with its first dual cores and single threaded apps bouncing between cores. Affinity or hard setting the turbo boost multiplier in the bios would do it.

It seems a lot of people have this problem always at the exact same time and place (Chernabog). I have no clue why it happens but the correct fix is to switch to from microVU to superVU. Credits to Saiki for this fix.
