I'm American, so I'm not quite sure what A-Level or Clearing is. College or something?

Do you do big, important tests when you are 18?

These are those, and they determine if you get into your chosen University; which is what I think you call College.

It's confusing for me, because what I'd call college is where you go for 2/3 years to DO A-levels Tongue2

Clearing is where you go if you don't get your grades, like Hell for University applicants.

Oh, well we take exams at the end of the year and they put them all somewhere. Then when we go to apply for a college they just look at those.

At least I think that's how they do it. lol

So you only apply for places that you can definitely get into, there's no like 'hanging-in-the-balance" period? That would be great =p

Well we apply and wait for them to review our application. So what most people do is go to like 10 different colleges and apply for each one. Then they just wait.

Cool, so you know your results when you apply?

We apply to 5 Uni's like 6 months before our exams and get interviewed at the Uni. If your interview goes well then you can get a conditional(definitely getting in) or an unconditional(get in subject to getting good grades) and then you cut the choices down to 'Firm' (1st choice) 'Insurance' (2nd choice). You sit your exams and wait in the lurch for a month =[
