Also, from my FAQ:

I'm using save states exclusively and have (insert problem here)!
____________________________________________________

Load from a memory card save. If you don't have one, then I hope your glitch isn't severe enough to prevent you from making one.

Save states are dumps of PCSX2's virtual PS2 memory, virtual CPU registers, emulator state, plugin state, etc .

If anything gets messed up by bad emulation, an error on your machine, cheats, etc etc, they will save that too for that reason. All emulators will in fact but the higher level the console the generally worse it can be because there is a lot more complex stuff going on.

Your error sounds more like an ISO issue than a save state issue though. Please post full emulog when you try to load.
Thanks to everyone for your responses and civility so far, and thanks for all the info. You've been great.
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, while the files are all in sstate, trying to load them while the game is open leaves all load slots grey'd out. If I drag a state file into the programme I get:

MMX.. SSE.. SSE2.. SSE3.. SSSE3.. SSE4.1.. SSE4.2.. AVX.. FMA
MMX2  .. SSE4a

I don't know why the savestates would be grayed out, unless you're using a new version of pcsx2 with older states.

Did you do anything that might have changed the game CRC like patch it, switch versions, etc?

To answer that please post the full emulog after you loaded the game.

Also are savestates in ps2-format?

As shown before my files are in p2s format.
I had to reselect my BIOS the day it stopped working, sorry that I forgot to mention that earlier, but I reselected the same one.

Hmmm. How did you have to reselect your BIOS? Why?

If it's not the exact same BIOS and version that could very well be the issue.
