Seagate external HDDs, and Amazon refunds
The other week I ordered a 3TB Expansion drive despite its many terrible reviews (at $140 I couldn't resist). Yesterday it arrived and one of the first things I noticed was that the thing idles at 60C. Anyone seen such a thing?

It was also randomly disconnecting and had bad sectors so I've already sent it back for a refund. Anyone have experience returning PC equipment to Amazon? I'm wondering if I should order another drive right now or wait a week to make sure there's no 'complications' with my return. I'm looking at a 3TB Green to put in my own enclosure

UPDATE: Amazon gave a full refund the day after I shipped it out... Good stuff Smile

60c is too hot to guarantee stable operation.

Seagates aren't known for managing disk warping with extreme temperatures. hdd's should be kept lower than 50c where possible.

Huge drives that spin fast get pretty hot. 60 degress is way too much though, I agree.

Yeah I've never seen a drive go past 50C even after hours of file transfers, I was shocked to see this one at 60C just minutes after being plugged in. 3+ platters at 7200rpm with practically no ventilation, I don't know how what they were thinking... Unless it's possible for a drive defect to cause abnormal temps?

Well, there was your first mistake ;p generally if something has a lot of negative reviews, there's something fundamentally wrong and should be avoided.

you wouldnt buy a power supply for $20 cos it was cheap, it's still going to set your house on fire.

Just a heads up watch Seagate drives from the China factory they are usually horrible quality, the ones from the other Seagate factory's should last a very long time - so check the label of the drive.
In my experience since you never know what you get I just switched over to WD black series rather then take a chance.

I used to be a Seagate fan, the china factory make drives with cheaper or not as good materials (I've had 4 seagate china drives fail)

Those Chinese Seagate factories were probably Maxtor's. The more things change the more they stay the same.
