Should I upgrade
#1
Hey guys, I didn't see anyone with my same set up after searching the threads so I wanted your opinion. I current have pc running on an amd x2 3800 2.0ghz and an ATI hd 4650. I'm trying to run Suikoden 5 and am currently getting 35-50 fps. My question is im thinking of upgrading my cpu to a 5200 2.7ghz specifically to get pcsx2 running at full speeds, will this boost be sufficient to get me where I need to be? If I can find a 5600 2.9ghz I'd get it but I'm having trouble finding it at a reasonable price.

Short answer: No.

It'll be a huge improvement, but I do not believe you'd get suikoden 5 running at full speed at those speeds. There will still be slowdowns for sure. Have you checked and seen what processors your motherboard fully supports? If the board supports AM2+, I'd suggest looking into the Phenom II line. If not, you'd probably be best off putting that money aside and slowly saving up for a AM2 board and processor.

Yeah, I checked the only amd 2 and low wattage so the 5600 is the fastest I can get.

I recommend a combo of a cheap AM2+ mainboard and a cheap AM3 CPU like mine. It overclocks like a breeze and has much more power than any AM2 based Athlon.

Wouldn't help PCSX2 in any way. He wants to play Suikoden 5 decently on PCSX2.

Yeah I know, but it's not like a Dual Core is not good enough for general PC gaming or work. I think the OP wants to save as much money as possible.

You are correct money is a factor and if I can't upgrade my current pc with a cpu that can handle pcsx2 than I'm not going to do a complete overhaul. It'll be more cost effective for me to just buy a used ps2 and a magic swap which is what I plan to do now. Thanks for all the advice.
