Well if its PSU with strong 12V rails 350 will be sufficient. But if not, it wont be enough.

I don't think there exists a 350w PSU has strong 12v rails(i.e 26a). The numbers wouldn't add up even if it was written high amp on the psu spec. Also, considering the peak powerful usage, 9800gt+c2d will require at least roughly 300w, so a 350w is not going to be enough.

Using that and setting a bare minimum amount of hardware (5400rpm drive, only 1 stick of ram, etc) you can barely barely BARELY squeak by with 350 watt PSU... And you never want to just squeak by. A 450 watt costs maybe $5 more and gives you a lot more breathing room.

But don't just get any random cheap 450W PSU. They often BS their ratings and only really supply less than 300W. Some, like the Thermaltake 430W PSUs, are just rebranded ATX 1.3 or earlier PSUs, which still lack amps on the 12v rail and don't provide the full claimed wattage.

Obviously it can't possibly get the exact wattage for each part... I mean how can you expect it to list the power requirements of every possible part? There will be variations across things like hard drives etc. even at the same rotational speed.

And also, the calculator would show the maximum draw while under full load, and probably uses manufacturer specified ratings when possible, so yes, your actual power draw would probably be less. However, it's obviously much better to be able to accommodate the higher wattage requirement as opposed to a lower one, so that you have some breathing space. "Better safe than sorry".

This calc has a very few options too be honest .. it depends mostly on GPU which is probably manufacturer specified - but these values are way too high usually. I saw a few calcs with more options too choose and much accurate ones that this.
Of course its better safe .. but in some reasonable way, not 150-200W more than needed.

My i7 and radeon 4850 have been working perfectly fine on my 360Watt. My psu has 2 12v rails for a total combined amps of 31. But the 12v rails can supply a max of 300watts when both are fully pulled from so the combined max is more like 25. The rails individually can supply 16 or 15.
