software mode runs on the cpu.
switching the gpu adapter somehow changed the output. Maybe there is something wrong with his gpu. Try to run the emulator on the cpu seems reasonable to me.

So you can update dx manually under win8.1? Op mentioned that this is not possible. I don't have win8.1 to cross-check.

yes, you can update dx manually under win8.1 since, i have done it many times.but, since the op mentioned he could play dolphin and other native pc games dependent on direct-x. so i doubt that, the updating direct-x will fix the problem

According to Microsofts website DX 11 comes pre-installed on Windows 8.1 and can only be updated through Windows Update. Unless i read it wrong

no the dx11 that comes pre-installed in 8.1 is entirely different from that link what he had provided to install.
it's safe to install the link what he provided to be sure that you have the latest drivers.
