I am running PCSX2 on Ubuntu 14.04 on my Macbook Pro 6,2. The game I've tried is Metal Gear Solid 2. It sits around 1-2 fps, or around 11 fps when I experimented with "CDVD (fast)".
My Intel CPU is only 2.4 GHz, which I suspect may be the problem. Any suggestions? Is it possible to play MGS2 on my machine?
Thanks.

those fps seem low even for your cpu. make sure you have at least mesa 10 and try hardware mode.

edit...nevermind. you have gallium as your igpu is very weak as your cpu is very old. gallium is essentially the default slow as hell if all else fails gpu driver. a newer minimum sandy bridge would help. a system with nvidia card would be even better.

So your suggestion is I buy an Nvidia card or, failing that, a new CPU?

You would have to buy a new system all together.

First you should configure your system properly so you'll actually have hardware acceleration. Because right now you're running on llvmpipe, which is a software renderer.
But even then, your GPU is Ironlake, which isn't powerful enough for PCSX2, at least not in Linux. It is possible to play some games in Windows using GSdx, but you can't use GSdx in Linux, because the Linux Ironlake driver isn't complete enough.
If you want to use PCSX2 in Linux, get a modern Haswell machine. Not only is the Haswell GPU much faster, its Linux driver is a lot more complete and so it's possible to use GSdx. On your current machine you'll have to use Windows.
