In Xenoaga 3 though, the robot battles ran really smoothly for me, only the special effects of the awakening causes minor slowdown.

Same here. Special Attacks while in Anima mode causes a little bit of slowdown, but everything else runs at 60fps. I can eliminate this by going from 3,53GHz up to 4,4GHz on Intel i5 760.

Really, by overclocking your CPU? To me, it always looked like the GPU cannot deal with the Anima effects properly.
Intel i5 3450
AsRock B75-Pro3-M
Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC
8GB DDR3-1333 RAM
Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB
Seagate 7200.14 1TB x2
Enermax Triathlor 450W PSU

Similar.
For me Episode 3 is pretty GPU intensive, Episode 1 is pretty CPU intensive.
Episode 2 is pretty easy to play.

the default skipdraw of 3 is not a cause of shadow issues, the cause is invalid mapping due to internal resolution scaling.

skipdraw 5 causes stuttery action (and you lose most shadows) and less than 3 causes those lines on joints on the world map.

Im having same issue on my Radeon HD 6650M 2gb vram,
menus go 28/33 fps around, using Directx11 Hardware mode.
(it may be a laptop but CPU intel i5 2430M 2.4ghz got MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, Intel 64 instructions
so everything runs fine except the system menus, so its not GPU Radeon friendly i gess?)
