A processor is simply far more capable of this kind of thing (processing "cleaner"), it just can't handle the workload as effectively (in terms of speed) as it would under optimum conditions. The additional support of the GPU can help tremendously, especially when asking for an even larger workload (i.e. up-scaled internal res). If the implication of the GPU does face some kind of trouble (in terms of compatibility), then it may come out slower and/or with graphical errors, as opposed to with software rendering. (Note: Even software rendering may be slow and/or have graphical errors.)
