final fantasy x situation

Running an ISO of Final Fantasy X (own multiple physical and digital copies of FFX), but in the first battle when selecting battle commands no actions occurs.  The cursor makes the correct sounds (it's not similar to the lilypad issue of a prev post), the menu disappears and it seems to be about to execute, but then the menu will reappear.  It reminds me of when the disc lid is open on the PS1 and it can load the next command in rpg battles.  Nothing crashes, none of the animations freeze, the menu just pops back up.

srsly, however, the X button worked fine selecting anywhere else except the first battle frs. I got through first battle by selecting with square, which finally got the cursor to highlight the enemies. I determined it was a mapping issue when inputting the button combination for the character's special move in the second battle was completely haywire.
