i tried importing the .max save file directly with mymc and opened the game but it said there was no existing save file on the memory card and asked me if i wanted to continue without loading

There are 4 reasons.
1.You didn't import the save to the card you are using with pcsx2
2.You imported the card to a card that is set as a second card(some games read only the first card)
3.The save is not for your version of the game
4.The save is damaged.

Inside the disk/image you'll find a file with name that look like this
S***_***.**
What is the full name

Also which save you downloaded.
