both have been accused of using such tricks, especially the game specific improvements (e.g. named "catalyst a.i." for ati) are not really that transparent. it would have been better to export these game specific settings of the graphics driver into .ini or .xml files, so that everyone can see what they are changing and edit them to their likes. i'm absolutely satisfied with my ati, but i hate it that with "catalyst a.i." enabled i'm e.g. unable to activate any aa for crysis, neither the in game nor the driver settings for anti aliasing have any effect.
