which one of these processors ?
i'm torn between the phenom x 4 965 black edition and the i3 2100 sandy bridge for my new budget build. most pc gamers have recommended the i3 as it's slightly better for gaming now, and has a better upgrade path for the future , but i also do other work on my pc that will benefit from the extra cores in the phenom

which one of these 2 processors is best for pcsx2? it could be my deciding factor

i3 2100, has better per core AND over all performance!

Specs:
Intel Core i7 2600K
Gigabyte P67A-UD4-B3
G.Skill 4GB 1600Mhz 6-8-6
eVGA GTX580-SC

alright thanks! just making sure incase pcsx2 somehow took more advantage of the 4 cores in the phenom or something. was already leaning towards the i3 so this seals it.

The AMD is the better cpu, and depending on what MB you buy you will have a good upgrade path for the new line of AMD's if you so desire in the future. Oh but yes intels are suited much better for pcxs2, but i wouldn't solely base a purchase for my PC on that alone.

Id have to say the intel. If your goal is mostly gaming be that pc/pcsx2 the intel is a better choice. The amd is only better in rare cases where all the cores can be put to full use(image/video editing for example), and even here the intel doesnt fall far behind. The only reason to get the amd IMO is if you plan to upgrade to its next generation when those finally get out.

Specs:
CPU: C2D E8400 @ 3.6
GPU: GTX 560Ti 2Gb
MOB: Asus P5QL
RAM: Crucial 4Gb
OS: Windows 7 64bit/XP 32bit

It really depends on what you're going to do with it... If you plan on overclocking, the AMD will likely win out in almost all benchmarks including PCSX2... provided you have an adequate cooling for it. If you plan on running both on stock... the intel will win easily for PCSX2 but likely won't beat the AMD in multithreaded performance.

It's easy to dismiss AMDs anymore, but i3's are still the bottom-barrel intel and AMD hasn't sunk that low yet Wink

Yes I forgot to mention that, with overclocking the amd wins definitely.

Edit: But seriously the Phenom II is starting to show its age. Its older than the previous I3/5/7 generation(unless I got my years mixed up). Its really about time they release the next lineup. When the bottom line Intel is competing with one of the top models its time for some new stuff. The phenom has been really good its just old Smile.

Specs:
CPU: C2D E8400 @ 3.6
GPU: GTX 560Ti 2Gb
MOB: Asus P5QL
RAM: Crucial 4Gb
OS: Windows 7 64bit/XP 32bit

I can't believe someone actually believes the i3 2100 is on par with the "old" 965... well, it may be true on single threaded applications or even in 2 thread applications... but...

Anyway, is fact AMD is around 2 generations behind, if some their processors can really compete with i5 or i7 it will be the bulldozer, the Phenom II is indeed outdated.

Imagination is where we are truly real

If he's getting a BE I assume he's overclocking. At 3.7GHZ a Ph2 not quite on par but not to far from a 2100.
