Will the pcsx2 eventually require less clock speed, or will it always require at least a 3.2 to run most games smoothly?
the emulator itself is already showing very good results, and yes eventually this emu will require much less raw power from both cpu and gpu,but you know that this aint gonna happen soon, besides the fact that it wont get sooo much optimized either, for example you wont run it full speed on a pentium 4
maybe in future ... but wuold count in nearest future .. its already very well going. Emulation just requires hell a lot of processing power, it cant be otherwise no matter what
In particular the PS2 is very different from a PC and thus takes a lot of power to emulate, relative to the power of the actual hardware. More or less the closer the design of the device you are emulating is to the device you are emulating it on, the faster things will be. PC emulators are very fast for this reason. You find programs like VMWare can offer near native speed for a lot of stuff. Reason is that it, in fact, IS natively executing. Ring 3 code is executed straight on your CPU with no changes.

Well the PS2 is a very strange design over all, and very different from our PCs. As such a whole lot of work has to go in to emulating it. So it is going to take a lot of power, even though it is very primitive compared to the systems of today.
with dual core 2,5 ghz a lot of games work at normal speed with gsdx hardware
for software you need more powerfull pc
software is better than hardware

Then there comes along a console that isnt different at all from the PC architecture (xbox) and still takes freaky kind of hardware to emulate.
Probably because of that encryption method.
I thought that Xbox emulation hasn't gone anywhere because people simply have no motivation to emulte it when most of it's games are already on the pc.

it will probably stay around a c2d @ 3.2 ghz to run most games at playable speeds (w/o speedhacks).

its true that we will optimize parts of the emu, but our number 1 priority is compatibility; its possible that when we correctly emulate more stuff, the emulator will get slower.

anything that is too-slow, and only needed for a few games, we will probably make a speedhack that lets you turn it off, so that speed isn't effected in games that don't need the fully-correct emulation.

but if there is a big speedup in pcsx2's future (excluding speedhacks), then it would most-likely be due to some big rewrite, and thus it will be a while before that happens...
i think we're better off hoping for cheaper and faster processors, than expecting pcsx2 to get sufficiently faster (again w/o speedhacks).
