The emulator just closes when I get to the first cinematic after pressing new game

don't you have any speedhack enabled ?
try gsdx software too, it may help
Shadow Hearts videos hang with GSdx DX9 Hardware, it's fixed in DX10. Also videos are messed up with any GSdx hardware mode so use Software for them
awww..... DX 10? I dont have that.... Well I guess I need to find another game
Just use the Software renderer, it's much better for this game.
