Do I have to use my keyboard instead. And if so, how do I configure the keyboard as controller?

I realise this is a total noob question. Please help

okay I downloaded the plugin lilypad 0-10-0 and unzipped it into the plugins folder.
Still doesn't work, what am I doing wrong?
There is a blank lilypad button that I can't click.
Do I need to install a different version?

No need to download the plugin, it comes with the official distribution... still you need to configure the buttons at that "pad 1" tab, what I believe is what is missing there since the gamepad is seen by the plugin since the first post.
