which one, the installer or the binary. because mine crashes too in the start up and after the configuration.
and i got the installer from the main website. IDK how to use the binary version.
well i just got a binary version to work w/out crash. if ur using vista:
install pcsx2 in documents.
I was told by another user this when the crashing happened to me.
It also works on the desktop
my laptop stats are similar to your computer except i use:
AMD Turion X2 Ultra X64 Processor(dual core 2.10ghz)
ATI RADEON 3200
2 gb ram
But i have seen program work on i gb ram, Nvidia is great to use. mine is a little faster on ram.
and i don't know about last three things you had trouble with, I am still new at using the program.

May be you can see something in the log files? (there are strace and gdb backtrace too)
