RE: NVIDIA .vs. ATI
From a performance and features perspective its the HD5850, and as long as the PC survives as a games machine and gets not only continued support from games developers, but also gets the full benefit of DX11.
From a price perspective, between the two, its still with the HD5850.

But from a bigger picture, you could say nvidia's drivers are just so much better, although the 190.xx drivers have been lackluster to say the least.
You have profiles with nividia's drivers, as well as the ability to make your own SLI profiles without needing to wait 3 months for ATI to sort out theirs.
ATI's control panel, or CCC, is still a little bloated and messy, I still prefer nividia's cleaner-looking faster CP.
ATI also have a habit of releasing a good set of Catalyst drivers, followed by a poor set, cat 9.5 was the last set I remember being a notable exception to being poor.

Still, if I had the cash and could justify a purchase between the two I would either go for the HD5850, or wait until next year Q1 and see what nvidia bring to the table, and hopefully some price reductions.

But to me, unless you're using a big LCD screen with a native 1920x1080 res or higher, a nvidia GTX260 216, or ATI HD4870, both cheap now, will do plenty for emulators and games.

The HD 5850 is clearly the better card. It's packed full of more processing power and DX11 capable(which means little currently, but give it a year). Then again, the 5850 is a new generation over the GTX 295, so you can't exactly compare them, fairly.

I would wait for Nvidia 3xx series for any comparisons. It's not like Nvidia won't have DX11 support in the future.

A Hint:

nVidia to DX11 products out in Q4

RE: NVIDIA .vs. ATI
How can you compare a 5850 and a GTX295?....
Nvidia won't have a card ready by Xmas, there prototype was plastic...

They're running out of 55nm cores, there yields are low.. Rumours spreading that they've quit the high end market like 3DFX..

Bad times for PC gaming.

EDIT : For the record, the GTX295 dominates the 5850..

AMD Phenom II 940 @ 3.6GHZ, 4GB PC8500 @ 1100MHZ, 4870x2 @ Stock.

RE: NVIDIA .vs. ATI
i personally got high hopes for the 5870x2

but its not a good comparison between the 5850 and GTX295 unless the 5850 is in crossfire
the HD5xxx series does however have dx11 and the GTX295 doesnt

so i'd put my money in the 5850 crossfire

I'd say the 5870 tbh.. Fastest single GPU in the world, can be overclocked easily.

RE: NVIDIA .vs. ATI
nVidia seems to be having a hard time getting good yields with their latest "gpgpu" baby....2% is really terrible, 40nm on a huge die. Tsk tsk.
