RE: Sony's plans for PS2 and Dreamcast emulation on PS3
Okay 2 more questions.

1. what is a GX290? When you say that the Cell destroys the i7+GX290, I don't exactly know what you mean. I searched google and I still have no idea. Is that a graphics card or something? Like a GTX 295.

2. Does the very high bandwidth of the eDram in the ps2 have any huge impact on being able to emulate the ps2 on the ps3?

Also, thank you everyone especially air for clearing up so many questions. I don't want to sound annoying by asking about so many things.

I can't imagine the PS3 being unable to emulate a PS2, given all the information Sony has.

IIRC (and I probably don't) the reason the the RAM bandwidth was an issue was because the PS2 had a very small amount of video memory, and had to constantly shuffle data in and out. I vaguely remember Gabest saying this was mitigated by intelligently not shuffling data out that would later be reloaded, saving a unload-load cycle that is relatively expensive on PC's.

Probably the same deal with the PS3, only really remove stuff from video RAM when space is required. Or this is all completely wrong and way off but it sounds right in my head, and at 7am that's what counts.

It would be interesting to recompile VU code with the cell main processor, then send that recompiled program to the SPEs to run.
I don't know much about coding for the ps3 though...

More likely they use the SPEs to do a multithreaded software rasterizer, and don't bother with texture uploading or texture caching at all. The SPEs could even unswizzle PS2 textures on the fly with cycles to spare, saving on the RAM-costly stage of caching any textures at all. And even a purely soft synth would still look better than the initial built-in EE/GS hack-up Sony did originally (which had numerous graphical errors in addition to no upscaling).
