Back when I first started getting on the internet, I was hooked on Magic:The Gathering. Two or three cards I had had flavortext on them that quoted Arcum Dagsson, Soldevi Mechanist. I thought it was nicely obscure, and stole Arcum_Dagsson as a handle.

These days, there are nore cards with quotes by him, and he even has his own card, so I was finding that the handle was already taken more and more often. I don't even play M:TG any more, and I eventually decided to lop off the last name and add a number.

Being a big fan of Douglas Adams, the number 42 was an obvious one to use. (My next choices would have been 23, and then 5...)

Me no special, only made the name while registering. Easy come easy go.
