I was wondering if any of you can get 60 FPS in Star Ocean 3, during this part:
Without any speed hacks, and at a res of 2x or greater, and in progressive mode (Triangle + X while booting), with PCSX2 0.9.7 r3113.
It's during the first part of the game, only a few minutes in.
If so, what CPU do you have, and what speed is it running at?
My PCSX2 Rig:Windows XP x32 & Windows 7 x64.
i5 2500k @ 4.0 GHz.
nVIDIA GTX 460 1 GB.

What does progressive mode do exactly? it seems to be making the game much slower (i think).

Interlaced is fields, progressive is frames.
Other than that I don't really think it's of significant importance really...

Nah it shouldn't reduce the frame rate by much.
On the real ps2 it would look alot smoother probably, and sharper.
I'll check the game in a day or so, I'm still waiting on it.

Interesting, I should try it on my PS2 sometime tomorrow. Triangle + Cross while booting you say?

I don't really know, never played this game, yet .
But I've set proscan mode in xenosaga 1 before and it's nice.
Makes it a bit clearer for sure and much faster fps.
Especially if you're using a capture card to see it on your monitor, then it looks very nice for a ps2 with composite out lol (1 cable rca type of video).
It would probably look like straight vga with a svideo out on the ps2.
I don't know how many games have this mode but it's usually a developer sort of thing they have hidden.
In xenosaga 1 you had to get into the dev mode menu to enable it, which is all in japanese.
It's a shame really these modes aren't enabled by default.
I believe it was meant for when the ps2 is in rgb mode, so you can output to certain type of monitors straight from the ps2 with the linux vga cable.
You don't need the cable or a vga monitor to take some advantage of it though.
I've checked it out on a normal us-ntsc tv.
And 2 capture cards, one in jp-ntsc mode (quadro4 900xgl with vivo) and the other us-ntsc mode (easycap2 usb, another phillips chip, with modded drivers) both in 720x480 res @ 29.97 fps.
Clears the screen up a bit on the tv, and a whole lot on the capture cards.

Thanks for testing out this game on your overclocked i5 750.
My main reason for asking this of the community is to see if it's possible for both AMD an Intel CPUs to render that scene at a solid 60 fps. So far, Intel is in the lead.
I'm not sure how GSdx, or the actual PS2 Hardware, deals with Progressive Mode, but the basic premise of it is that
480i draws 320 horizontal lines per pass (first pass even, second pass odd)
480p draws 480 horizontal lines per pass
By enabling it with the triangle + X method, you don't have to tell GSdx to use "Bob tff" to get rid of the screen shaking that Star Ocean 3 suffers from on PCSX2. It looks a little sharper to me than using Bob tff.
Yeah, very few PS2 Games support this hidden "Triangle +X" Progressive Scan Mode feature.
I only know of two other games that support it:
Radiata Stories
Suikoden IV (4)

Uh... both AMD and Intel can do that... just overclock them high enough...
It's not like it's a particularly very slow scene or anything.

Xenosaga 2 and 3, I don't know yet.
I only found out about it by using a gameshark or was it codebreaker code to enable the dev mode with a button press.
Then I messed with the menu options in the dev mode to find it.
It's something I will look into later, to add direct support for the dev functions as codes in artmoney.
Seems like it was codebreaker v10 I found it in, called debug menu.

Code: RENDERER (might be antialiasing). This SEEMS to change the in-game graphics
engine. Only scroll through these backwardsm or they don't work correctly.
Options are "DISP1" "SOFT" and the hiragana (japanese text) for 'nashi',
japanese for 'without'. I think DISP1 is hardware rendering/filtering, SOFT is
software filtering, and 'nashi' is no filtering.
The above quote is somewhat incorrect, it's the output mode like I mentioned before.
I'm not able to find anything on google about debug menu's on xenosaga 2 and 3 .
They likely exist but no one knows of them.
It's like the debug menu's on all snk branded neogeo games.
They all have them, but no has the codes to get into them.
I only know of them because I got into it by accident in kof2002.
And since the code in most snk games are from the same compiler, it's likely they all have them.

I would of thaught the base code was completely diff from xenosaga but it looks kinda simuler in the debug menu.
Debug menu's would be pretty interesting to see in xenosaga 2 and 3.
There's a debug menu for start ocean 2 I think, I notcied it being mentioned on google when looking for the above.
But I didn't see the actual code or anything.
Might be one for star ocean 3 as well.
As for testing speed of the game, I've got it about half dl'ed...
