Trying some fancy HP Lightscribe discs (Disc ID: CMC MAG. AM3).... no good.
The only thing I can think of is somehow I'm losing the "blessing" of the disc at some point... or that perhaps Madden 2007, listed as "probably good", isn't.
The main menu animation keeps running with the tray out, and I'm able to navigate the menu and it even loads the initial online component-- where it starts loading the "do you need to register for an account" screen just before it dies.
I suppose I should try that little weird local gaming shop (full of anime, wallscrolls, and import games, and operated by a 200-year-old woman who you can't imagine ever having held a controller in her life... and look into one of the commercial homebrew enabling options.
