Best environment for PCSX2 ?
#1
I was thinking of having a PC with my current specs that is optimized and only for PCSX2 (if it makes any difference), so there are some questions;

- which Win 7 version ?
- 32 or 64 Bit ?
- will less Win 7 updates make it faster ?
- will less installed programmes make it faster ?
- will no internet/antivirus have any impact ?
- does a HDD with much less installed make PCSX2 run better ?

I currently have a lot of programmes installed and this emu generally
runs good.
AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE OC 4.0 GHz, Corsair Hydro H70
AMD Radeon HD 6990 OC, Accelero Twin Turbo
ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX
OCZ Revodrive 3 X2 240 Gb
16 Gb G.Skill 1833 MHz

Home Premium is all you need imo

- 32 or 64 Bit ?
go for 64 but it wont make any big difference

- will less Win 7 updates make it faster ?
it's very dumb to skip win updates. update regularly

- will less installed programmes make it faster ?
minor difference, but yes. but taken to an extreme that would mean your PC is fastest when switched off, or idleing. use a utility (like glary) to uninstall old unused programes and clean up junk. defrag your HDD from time to time.

- will no internet/antivirus have any impact ?
you can disable your network connection and re-enable it at will. it may keep autoupdates from taking system resources. but again it wont make a big deal.

- does a HDD with much less installed make PCSX2 run better ?
not really, just defrag your HDD from time to time.

What makes a big difference is your CPU. If you can afford an i5 or i3, it will be money well spent. Dont be cheap with the motheboard either. Memory and other stuff is less important with regard to PCSX2, but generaly you should avoid buying cheap hardware unless it's unimportant junk like mice, speakers or whatever. Inside the case, everything should be costly but worth it, as opposed to cheap but worthless.

which Win 7 version ? Professional and Ultimate edition of Windows contains some advance functionalities such as domain support, BitLocker encryption... that a casual user would not use. There are no performance differences.

32 or 64 Bit ?PCSX2 is currently 32-bit. It runs on backward compatibility mode on 64-bit processor with no performance gain or penalty.

will less Win 7 updates make it faster ? No, unless the update is to fix a serious hardware bug, which is unlikely.

will less installed programmes make it faster ? If you programs do not run any process at Windows startup, then no. If they do (SQL Server for example), there is minor performance impact as long as your RAM is redundant.

will no internet/antivirus have any impact ? Internet has no impact. For antivirus programs, it depends. If you're using BitDefender or Norton, then yes. Those stupid antivirus programs constantly scan the computer for viruses, which consumes CPU resource.

does a HDD with much less installed make PCSX2 run better ? No. It may affect the game loading time if your ISO is put on a full drive with many small files.

Final word: PCSX2 performance depends on hardware, and PCSX2 coders.

Okay, I'm a little wiser now. Thanks Smile

Yes obviously, but in theory, playing PCSX2 north of the arctic circle would be good for keeping the CPU/GPU temps down 8)

It is not a pleasure to play while your pawns are frozen.

In my country it is hardly less than 15C in the winter and my pawns are frozen already. I cannot imagine what might happened if it were lower than 0C.

Actully, You could keep your PC just outside the window/door, run the cables through and play in your comfortable warm room. Seriously.
