Well pretty much any after market motherboard will be able to clock the non K CPUs up a few "speed bins", its by 3 or 4 I believe.
-Core i7 6700k @ 4.5 GHz
-GIGABYTE Z170X-Gaming 5
-G.SKILL Ripjaws V 16GB DDR4 2400 @ 14-13-13-30-1T
-EVGA GTX 970 4GB @ 1380/1853 MHz
-Crucial MX100 512GB, Silicon Power S60 120GB, Toshiba 2TB 7200 RPM
-PC P & C Silencer 750 Quad
-Windows 7 x64

-----

-Core i7 4710MQ
-16GB DDR3 1866
-GTX 965M 4GB @ 1127/1353 MHz
-Mushkin ECO2 240GB, HGST 1TB 7200 RPM

But it's a stone cold fact that they are severely outclassed by the competitor and dashed many hopes lots of people put onto their new architecture (which was, in all sense of word, a dud).

If I were you, I'd rather hold back a bit to gather cash to get enough for the K (a day or two holding back?) than regret your decision when a game require you to nudge the clockspeed a tad higher, you never know...

yeah correct..there were delays and delays for the launch first and then they launched a crap that can't even beat i3 2100..so sad while previws in early 2010 were telling that the performance of fx 8150 will be in direct competition with i7 extreme.Angry

Wait, only P67 and Z68 chipset allow for multiplier overclocking (which is the only easy way to overclock a sandy bridge processor), so be aware of that before choosing your motherboard.

(as a bonus note they also reportedly will support ivy bridge, so you can just drop in one when you want to upgrade in the future)

Any Sandy Bridge i5 or i7 that is not unlocked can be overclocked up to 4 CPU bins beyond their max Turbo, but the "Limited Unlocked" feature is not available on any H61 or H67 motherboard.

And, yes-- Ivy Bridge will still use the LGA1155 socket, so processors will be cross-compatible.
